BLOG , asakusa , Chado This sweet is from Funawa, a long-established confectionery shop in Asakusa. They are best known for their imo-yokan- a sweet potato yokan- but I also recommend their senbei, crispy crackers. Light, thin, and delicately sweet, they are made from just three simple ingredients: sweet potato, sugar, and salt. I usually serve them with a bowl of thin tea, a frothy cup of matcha. 2025.12.03
BLOG , asakusa , Chado Kurimushi Yokan is one of the traditional Japanese sweets- a steamed yokan with chestnuts. It’s made from a mixture of anko (sweet red bean paste), wheat flour, and powdered arrowroot. This Kurimushi Yokan is from Nishimura, one of the most traditional sweet shops in Asakusa, with over 160 years of history. The taste is elegant, smooth, and slightly chewy, and a gentle sweetness. It’s also their signature confection. 2025.10.07
BLOG , asakusa , Home Cooking Sukiyaki is a feast for us at home, and also a well-balanced meal. For my husband’s birthday, I used beef from Matsuki, a specialty shop in Asakusa. Along with plenty of vegetables, I added traditional ingredients such as shirataki, noodles made from konnyaku yam, and fu, a light and spongy ingredient made from wheat gluten. 2025.10.03
BLOG , asakusa This nikomi is another incredibly tasty pork dish from my absolute favorite izakaya.Different parts of pork are simmered in a soy sauce-based broth in a big hot pot. Under all the pork, you’ll find tofu that’s been quickly simmered and has soaked up all the flavour. I always order a boiled egg as a topping- it’s cooked in the same pot and tastes amazing. On top, there’s chunky chopped leek, Japanese mustard, and I usually sprinkle some shichimi, a Japanese chilli spice. The umami is deep, and the flavour and texture are rich and complex. Honestly, it’s hard to describe just how good it is- but one thing’s for sure: it goes perfectly with a beer! 2025.08.01
BLOG , asakusa This tsukune- juicy pork meatball, is from my absolute favourite izakaya. Most regulars order it with halved Japanese green peppers, piman, and eat them together in one bite. That combination is incredibly tasty- and it pairs perfectly with a lemon sour cocktail, shochu with lemon, ice, and soda water. If you get the chance, give it a try. Come visit Japan! 2025.07.28
